How to use the Phonics Trainer
Make sure your device’s sound is turned on.

1. Show your child how it works
Start with one word and show your child what to do. Tap each letter or sound, move the slider from left to right, and say the sounds out loud as you blend. When you finish the word, smile and act excited so your child sees that sounding out words is something to feel proud of.

Now let your child try the next word just like you showed them.

2. Hear the letter sounds
Have your child click or tap the letters to hear each sound. Encourage them to repeat each sound out loud to make sure they know the letter sounds.

3. Use the slider arrow to blend
Have your child move the slider arrow slowly from left to right. As each sound lights up, have them say that sound out loud. Please note that the slider arrow does not play audio. It gives your child a visual cue for when to say each sound.

4. Blend it faster
Have your child slide again and say the sounds a little faster. Try to make the sounds closer together each time until the word sounds smooth. If your child gets stuck, show them how to blend the sounds again. Many children need to hear and copy the blend several times before it clicks.

5. Check the word
Click or tap the speaker icon to hear the whole word. This helps your child check if they blended it correctly.

6. Practice more words
Use the arrows to move to the next or previous word. Revisit the same words a few times to build confidence and stronger word recognition.

7. Try a new word pattern
To change word categories, click or tap the letter or letters in the bottom right corner and choose a new pattern.
